Grow Your Aggie Century Tree with Jack & the Beanstalk

Helping Aggies raise the next generation of Century Trees—one strong root at a time.

At the Aggie Century Tree Project, we’re not just selling trees—we’re growing a legacy. Every Aggie Century Tree seedling you plant is grown from acorns collected under the iconic Century Tree on the Texas A&M campus. These Live Oaks carry the spirit of Aggieland, and with the right care, they’ll thrive for generations while funding scholarships and student aid for future Aggies.

Important Note for Potted Seedlings

The Jack & the Beanstalk Feeding Program is designed only for Aggie Century Trees that have been planted in the ground. Do not use this program while your tree is still in its one-gallon nursery container.

For young seedlings still growing in the one-gallon pot purchased from Aggie Century Tree, we recommend using Osmocote Smart-Release Plant Food (1 lb size) as recommended on the package that came with your tree. Buy the 1 lb Osmocote Smart-Release Plant Food here on Amazon

Once your tree is successfully planted in the ground, you can begin the full Jack & the Beanstalk program (skip Vibrance for the first six months after planting).

One of the best tools we recommend for giving your planted young Live Oak the fastest, healthiest start is the legendary Jack & the Beanstalk Feeding Program. Created right here in Bryan at Producers Lawn & Garden Center (part of Producers Cooperative Association), this program was designed specifically for Live Oaks and other shade trees in our Brazos Valley soils. It turns the “slow grower” myth on its head by delivering a powerful mix of nutrients, biostimulants, and soil amendments that encourage rapid, deep-rooted growth—just like Jack’s magical beanstalk.

The program is perfect for young and growing Aggie Century Trees (seedlings to trees under 6–8 inches in trunk diameter) that are now in the ground. Use it consistently for the first 5–7 years, and you’ll see noticeably faster establishment, denser canopies, and stronger drought resistance. Once your tree reaches a size that fits its space, you can scale back to spring and fall feedings.

Why This Program Works So Well for Live Oaks

Live Oaks in Texas face alkaline clay soils, hot summers, and occasional droughts. The Jack & the Beanstalk recipe addresses these challenges head-on:

  • Acidifies soil for better nutrient uptake
  • Builds strong roots with biostimulants and slow-release nitrogen
  • Improves soil structure without burning young roots

Local Aggie testimonials (including many Century Tree owners) confirm it delivers the growth boost we all want for our campus legacy trees.

Important note for young trees: Skip Vibrance for the first six months after planting so the roots can establish. Always apply on moist soil, and withhold dry fertilizers during extended dry spells.

The Recipe – Scaled to Your Tree’s Trunk Diameter

Measure trunk diameter at knee height (about 4 feet from the ground). All doses are per inch of diameter.

Wet Ingredients (Liquid Mix)

Mix in 1 gallon of water per inch of trunk diameter. Apply as a soil drench (great for pouring into PVC feeding tubes).

  • Miracle-Gro (24-8-16): 1 teaspoon per gallon
  • Agripon Biostimulant: 10 drops per gallon
  • Superthrive Vitamin & Hormone Stimulant: 10 drops per gallon

Dry Ingredients (Broadcast on Soil)

Spread evenly under the canopy, out to the drip line (never pile against the trunk).

  • Vibrance (18-14-7): 1 cup per inch
  • Sulfur Granules: 1 cup per inch
  • Powdered Gypsum (Calcium Sulfate): 1 cup per inch

Pro Tip for Young Trees: For a 2–5 inch caliper Aggie Century Tree, this is an easy weekend project. A 5-inch tree gets 5 gallons of liquid mix and 5 cups of each dry ingredient.

Monthly Feeding Schedule (First 5–7 Years)

Use the table above. “X” = one dose; “XX” = two doses (apply 2 weeks apart). Liquids can be applied twice a month when marked.

Advanced Tip: PVC Feeding Tubes for Young Trees

For the best results with your young Aggie Century Tree, install 2–4 perforated 3-inch PVC tubes (24–30 inches long) at the drip line. These act as both deep-watering tubes and moisture monitors—perfect for our variable Texas weather.  Here is a how to video I created (here).

  • Drill 5/16-inch holes in the lower 12–18 inches: two rows (opposite sides), spaced 5 inches apart vertically, starting 6 inches from the bottom.
  • Add 2–4 inches of pea gravel at the base.
  • Drop your Ecowitt WH51L (or similar) moisture probe down the tube so the probe sits directly in the soil at the bottom (not in gravel).
  • Pour the full liquid mix straight into the tubes for targeted root-zone delivery.

This setup helps you check deep soil moisture weekly and ensures your Jack & the Beanstalk liquids reach exactly where the young roots need them most.

Cautions for Live Oaks

  • Post Oaks: Skip Vibrance entirely (heavy nitrogen can stress them).
  • Willow, fruit trees, cottonwood, maple: Limit Vibrance to 1 lb per inch of trunk diameter per year (Feb & Oct only).
  • Always do a quick soil test every couple of years.
  • In drought, prioritize deep watering over dry fertilizers.
